Research Interests

Back to homepage                    Bath Homepage

My main research interests are environmental valuation and climate change. An expanding area of my research is in the field of tourism and sustainable development, particularly relating to the area of the use of economic instruments for encouraging sustainable tourism.

To date, I have worked on a number of issues relating to the environment including: climate change, rural water supply in India (for DfID), forestry in Russia (for the World Bank) and the valuation of recreational uses of water resources. A selection of some of the projects I have worked on is presented below. Feel free to email me if you have any questions.

Sustools: project to develop tools for the measurement of sustainable development and for application in Eastern Europe. For European Commission DG Research.

NEWEXT: project involves the estimation of the value of a statistical life, or value of life years lost, through application of a US designed computer package. Link to project website.

GREENSENSE: project takes forward the green accounting research framework, and attempts to integrate issues of sustainability into the analysis. Link to project website

Rural Water Supply Project: Maharashtra, India: this project involved the analysis of secondary data in the determination of the demand for water supply in rural India for the Department for International Development (UK). Econometric analysis using Microfit was involved.

Green Accounting: As part of the GARPII project, I co-produced a report on the effect of river water quality on recreational benefits, focusing on angling recreation values. This involved primary data collection and the application of green accounting methodologies to rivers in the UK.

Thai-Trem: This project involved participation in a workshop aimed at providing Thai nationals with the ability to train in the field of environmental economics. I provided background support for this, creating spreadsheets for the estimation of waste management options and noise pollution costs for the Thai case.

DFID Training course: This involved the writing of training materials relating to the water sector in developing countries, along with R. Boyd and A. Markandya.

World Bank Russian Sustainable Forestry Project: I assisted in the economic and financial analysis of a proposed World Bank forestry project in Khaborovsk, Krasnoyarsk and Leningrad Oblasts, Russia.
