Friday, October 11th, 2002.2 p.m. in Room 3E.3.5Prof. Malcom FaddyUniversity of Birmingham"Discrete data modelling and analysis"The standard discrete distributions binomial, Poisson and negative binomial may be considered as special cases of a general formulation involving Markov birth processes. Using this general formulation a very broad class of discrete distributions can be constructed, including distributions under-dispersed relative to the Poisson and binomial distributions, as well as the more common over-dispersed alternatives such as mixed distributions. The methodology will be developed using a number of example data-sets as illustrations, and some possible deficiencies associated with more standard analytical techniques mentioned.
